BIO >>
Juan Barte is recognized for his work as a photographer, editor and cultural manager. With a diversity of approaches and themes, his projects are characterized by non- linear narratives that explore the possibility of different social relations in the current context.
His process, built on a solid conceptual foundation and exhaustive research, is defined by close engagement with his subjects. His projects, often spanning years, offer a broader and complex vision of the world. Barte zooms in on the subject, isolating details until they take on an autonomous presence—becoming “beings” in their own right. No longer tied to the identity of the person portrayed, these fragments instead serve to convey his intended narrative. By removing a clear focal point—typically the subject’s direct gaze into the camera—he invites the viewer’s attention to shift across multiple details, opening the door to varied interpretations and meanings. Barte turns the act of looking into an active experience, shared between artist and audience. Barte’s work has been exhibited in several galleries and institutions, such as Espacio Valverde in Madrid, Atelier Laforest in Maine, USA, or Bergamo Botanical Garden in Italy. His work is part of public and private collections in different countries, such as the Antonio Pérez Foundation, the MER Collection or the Irving & Font Collection. His publications have also been acquired by libraries such as the New York Public Library, the Getty Research Institute, or the documentation center of the Museo Nacional Reina Sofía, MNCARS. Juan Barte actively promotes photographic culture through events and workshops as a coordinator of the Photobook Club Madrid, fostering dialogue and collaboration within the photographic community. Additionally, throughout his career, he has participated in talks and discussions with leading professionals in the field, and has received awards such as the VEGAP Scholarship for Creation or the NAHR, Nature, Art & Habitat Residency in Italy. He was also shortlisted for the Photo London Book Dummy Award. Barte’s most recent project has been praised both by the public and by specialized critics in media such as La Fotografía Magazine, The Photo Book Journal, or The Pictorial.EXHIBITIONS >>
